Lego Robotics

FIRST Lego League (FLL ) Challenge and Explore Signups

Does your child like to play with Legos? Are they a “master builder”?

If so, FLL Challenge might be the perfect opportunity for your child to flex their Lego building skills.

The FLL Challenge program is targeted at 9-16 year olds (usually Traut 4th and 5th graders). Each FLL Challenge team will build and program an autonomous Lego robot to execute a series of missions on a 4’x8’ playing field. They will also research and present a solution to a pressing social issue. There are 4-10 members on a team and each team needs 2 adult coaches. FLL Challenge teams will meet with their team usually 2 times per week, 2 hours per meeting. The FLL Challenge season usually runs from Aug to the middle of Nov and ends with a tournament where the teams will compete against many other northern CO FLL Challenge teams. The cost per team varies from $300-$500 depending on whether you need to purchase a Lego robotics kit or not. Traut has several FLL Challenge kits that can be rented for the season for a nominal fee. More details about the FLL Challenge program can be found at http://www.firstlegoleague.org

Not quite ready for FLL? The FLL Explore program is a great introduction for the younger “master builders”. The FLL Exploreprogram is targeted at 6-10 year olds (usually Traut 1st through 4th graders). Each FLL Explore team will build a model with at least 1-moving part and put together a small poster and presentation. There are 4-6 members on a team and each team needs 2 adult coaches. FLL Explore teams will meet with their team usually once a week for 1.5-2 hours per meeting. The FLL Explore schedule runs from Jan to Apr and ends with a FLL Explore Expo where the teams can demonstrate their work. The cost per team varies from $75-$300 depending on whether you need to purchase a FLL Explore kit or not. Again, Traut has several FLL Explore kits that can be rented for the season at a nominal cost. More details about the FLL Explore program can be found at http://www.juniorfirstlegoleague.org

If you are interested in either of these programs or want to coach, please add your contact information to the following signup spreadsheet:

https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/11eaKEE24W0C4WOcM1NF-l_tzUcbutqcXYBTnXPx6iOM/edit?usp=sharing

Or contact the Traut Lego Coordinator at tckslegos@gmail.com. Signup deadline is Friday 8/25/23 for FLL Challenge and 1/12/24 for FLL Explore.

  • Space is limited by the number of coaches that sign up so not everyone that signs up is guaranteed a spot on a team.
  • Coaches will form teams of kids from the signup spreadsheet.
  • Practice days, times, and locations will be determined by the parent coaches of each team after the teams are formed
  • This is a parent-led and coached activity. Please consider coaching to ensure your child has a spot on a team.
